Welcome our newest hospice dog, Schivo*.


Schivo comes to us from San Jose Animal Care Center via San Jose Animal Advocates and Tails of a Shelter Vet


Schivo is a 7 yr old, 120 lb Bernese Mountain Dog.


Schivo was purchased as a puppy from a breeder and lived his 7 years being the loyal friend to his family until they did the ultimate betrayal and dumped him at the shelter to be euthanized.


He gave them seven years of love and they threw him away. Threw him away like trash.


Why? Well, they dumped Schivo at the shelter because he "had cancer" and "wasn't eating"... well, we know the not eating part was a lie because he hasn't stopped eating since he got to his forever foster home. As far as the cancer, well... we have not been able to track down any vet records that prove this as they were not surrendered with him.


We have a hard time believing that "metastatic splenic histocytic sarcoma" just rolled off the tip of the tongue of the people dumping him but we also have a hard time believing that anyone who would spend the kind of money to have cancer that specifically diagnosed would do their loyal, loving, HAPPY dog the disgrace of dumping him at a shelter to be euthanized. Had his quality of life deteriorated to the point where he needed to be euthanized, the diagnosing veterinarian should have had zero issues with helping Schivo cross the bridge. But here we are. And there is not a nice way of cushioning what they did or why they did it.


We were arranging the pickup of a 16 yr old chihuahua (to be introduced tomorrow) and we were asked if we possibly had room for him. Well, it just so happens that a good friend of Umbrella of Hope has a Berner of her own (see Elena the Berner in picture number 4 next to Schivo). And she just so happened to be able to go pick up Schivo and the chihuahua at the shelter. And so here we are.


So, Schivo is safe with Elena, her mom and the rest of the pack and he will be well taken care of whether that be for one week or one year. He is fostered-hospiced-adopted into Casa Elena.


But, it turns out that 120 lb dogs eat a LOT of food. And need a lot of supplies, toys, treats, beds and grooming. And take large amounts of pain meds for their bad hips.


We also may have to pursue some diagnostics if we cannot track down any medical records that show that Schivo does indeed have cancer. And if he does have cancer, we will need to be able to provide him with excellent comfort care and end of life services when that time arises (with dignity AT his foster home TYVM).

Farewell, Schivo...



 



'As I stand on the mountaintop, the great bird approaches. He is small in my sight, but grows larger on approach until I am blessed with the full sight of his graceful wings, proud countenance and good company.



 



All too quickly, he grows small again on the horizon and disappears from view. And I call out, "Look, there. He's gone."



 



Gone from my sight, that is all. His diminished size is in me, not in him.



 



Because there are other mountaintops beyond me. And at the precise moment when I note the great bird's departure from my view, I know there are new eyes taking up the sight of him. And fresh voices calling out, "Here he comes!" '*



 



Thank you, sweet Schivo, for giving us the beauty of your presence and allowing us to give you back the dignity that was taken from you. You gave us more than we could ever give you in return. Say hello to our many friends who have gone before you and wait for us. We will miss you, forever.



 



Although our veterinarians were never able to find any signs of cancer in Schivo, he did have horrific hips and was having extreme difficulty in walking. We had reached the point where multiple veterinarians were struggling to manage his pain levels and as of Monday he had lost the ability to stand. We were unable to watch him suffer any longer.



 



Please send your thoughts towards his foster/hospice mom, Sarah. She slept on the floor with him the last two weeks and according to her he made an amazing "little spoon". She is hurting this morning because she loved him like her own and they bonded greatly in the short time they were together.



 



Your donations made it possible for him to have an orthopedic bed, gripper socks and mats, vet care, super strength pain medication in incredibly large doses, the best food ever and he was able to exit this world in his home beside his mom as we had a veterinarian come to them to help him pass. (This was after a day of several gourmet hamburgers and after eating a plate of steak, potato chips and chocolate as his last meal**).

*The exact author of the poem is unknown. It is most certainly based on A Parable of Immortality by Henry Van Dyke and a similar poem was read by the character of Dr Garrett Macy on the TV show Crossing Jordan.
